Career Reality: 2015

| January 9, 2015

“The biggest mistake that you can make is to believe that you are working for somebody else. Job security is gone. The driving force of a career must come from the individual. Remember: Jobs are owned by the company, you own your career!” ~ Earl Nightingale

You are the CEO of your own career…

You are in charge of the direction of your career… your life… and the lives of those you love.

Only you have the power to change direction, and move your career onto the fast track to success.

Imagine getting these stats dropped on you, as CEO of your career, with a yellow post it note that says, “What do you want to do about these numbers????”

On July 5th, the revised  jobs report revealed an alarming, yet amazing statistic.

When the payroll report was released last month, the world finally noticed what we had been saying for nearly three years:that the US was slowly being converted to a part-time worker society. This slow conversion accelerated drastically in the last few months, and especially in June, when part time jobs exploded higher by 360K while full time jobs dropped by 240K.

In July we are sad to report that America’s conversion to a part-time worker society is not “tapering”: according to the Household Survey, of the 266K jobs created (note this number differs from the establishment survey), only 35% of jobs, or 92K, were full time.

The rest were… not.

But what really shows what is going on in America at least in 2013, is the following summary: of the 953K jobs “created” so far in 2013, only 23%, or 222K, were full-time. Part-time jobs? 731K of the 953K total.

Disposable vs. Indispensable…

I will say this twice. You have only ONE option, as this is a Mega-Trend that will last for the next two generations.

You must differentiate yourself based on your power to achieve powerful RESULTS.

You must be seen as indispensable… not disposable.

Consistently produce better results — and do it in less time — and you will WIN.

Don’t, and you won’t.

Less than half of all working Americans are now employed with a full time job.

In fact, only 47% of the American workforce is employed full time, and a shocking 53% are considered “part time.”

Since the mid-1990s there has been a dramatic shift in the part-time versus full-time status of the workforce. The ratio of part-time to full-time employment was relatively steady from 1977 through 1990 (Averaging 58% ±). Between 1990 and 1995, part-time work among older workers began trending upward with a corresponding decline in full-time employment. This trend has now become epidemic and is affecting not just older people in the workforce, but the ENTIRE workforce as a whole.

A shift from 58% in 1995 to 47% in 2013 represents an 19% drop in just 8 years, and many economists see this accelerating further as older Americans stay in the workforce longer.

A few more factoids on the topic:

Today, the long term unemployed make up 42% of total unemployed. That is to say, of course, those who are actually counted as unemployed instead of “Not in the labor force”.

43.2 million Americans receive food stamps. That’s 18.1% of all working age Americans. If they all have on average 1.5 dependents, which is probably a reasonable estimate, a full one third of the US population receives at least part of their food through this systemRead more…

Clearly, the numbers reflect a growing gap between those who have a full time career that is both, emotionally and financially rewarding, and those who are struggling to make ends meet with 1, 2 or even 3 part time jobs.

Worse, depending on racial, age/education or ethnic make up, the current US unemployment rate averages 15-25% — and in some cases — 35-50% within any given group are currently unemployed.

This is heartbreaking, discouraging and just downright scary news.

For all of us.

But there is HOPE if you take the role of CEO of your Career seriously. Within these numbers are outstanding opportunities for real success.
