When You Change The Way You Look…

| April 24, 2013

“The man who perceives life only with his eye, his ear, his hand, and his tongue, is but little higher than the ox or an intelligent dog; but he who has imagination sees things around and above him, as the angels see them.” ~ Henry Ward Beecher

Seeing With Full Spectrum Insight…

My dear friend, Ryan Sarti sent us this fabulous song he wrote and performed about seeing from a completely different perspective.

Some people see life as a glass half full… a glass half empty… or a glass that has been shattered by living with failed hopes and dreams… for far too long.

At virtually every level, VISION requires you to actually SEE.

Otherwise, regardless of what you say, you are simply BLIND to the world around you.

Go through life blind to ever-present opportunity, and you begin to feel trapped inside a slow-moving nightmare.

However, start to actually see and seize the opportunities that surround us, and life takes on a completely different flavor.

You STOP seeing with black and white, either/or vision where you constantly find yourself on the horns of a dilemma (what happens when you have only 2 choices) and you START seeing with full-color, full spectrum insight.

This is vital to your overall success in life… and vital to your level of happiness, satisfaction and feeling of meaning and significance.

Seeing Smarter Using Your Inner-Vision…

One of the greatest quotes I ever read was attributed to Albert Einstein in a Saturday Evening Post Article from 1929…

“I believe in intuitions and inspirations. I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am… [but] I would have been surprised if I had been wrong.”

“I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

Fast forward to 1982 when Alan Kay, now Senior Fellow at Apple, made several observations that changed the way I thought about the future and my role in creating it. He was speaking at a “Creative Think” seminar  in Palo Alto where he was discussing the challenges of creating a new computing platform (Mac) from the ground up.

He had spent his early career at Xerox PARC and is the father of object oriented programming and the Small Talk computer language. Virtually every great idea we use today is based on Alan’s early vision and work.

Perhaps his best known quote, often attributed to others, is “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” No question, this is absolutely true.

To me, however, his observation that “Point of View is worth 80 IQ Points” is by far the most prophetic observation of all time!

How you SEE a problem or opportunity determines if you are SMART enough to solve it.

Remain stuck, you remain stupid may sound a bit harsh, but as Forrest Gump so aptly pointed out, “Stupid is as stupid does!”

You decide.

Turning an object upside down… changing the light… looking inside… shaking it… exploring its cracks and crevices… wondering why it exists… weighing it  — just being curious — is a great start towards a totally different perspective and totally different view point.

Change your point of view… everything changes.

Change your way of seeing… and you suddenly start seeing with that Sixth Sense you hear so much about.

You start to KNOW what to do, where only a few minutes before, you were dead stopped.

The answer becomes clear. It jumps out at you.

You are SMARTER because you are drawing on your IMAGINATION, not just your KNOWLEDGE.

Remember, “Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

Imagination stirs your passion… ignites your soul… and moves you to fully engage your life on a totally different level.

Reignite Your Vision…

SOP_3DShadCD_Sm3eWhen Kent and I were writing Success On Purpose: The Starting Point for a Life of Happiness, Satisfaction and Significance, we asked a simple question, “What is the difference between people who achieve success beyond their wildest hopes and dreams, and people who burn up their entire lives, struggling to find meaning and direction?”

The answer is found in your sense of passion, purpose and mission — a different way of seeing the future through the lens of your Someday Dreams and Goals.

If you lack clarity of Values… clarity of Vision… and clarity of Roles… you never get to the conviction that what you are doing is the RIGHT thing to be doing.

You never find your Natural Mission in life. Thus you never truly commit and draw on the courage to take bold action.

Thus, this lack of SEEING holds you captive to opportuity-limiting status quo thinking… which holds your future hostage to the vagaries of confusion, fear, indifference and doubt.

To those people, life becomes a tragedy of unfulfilled hopes and dreams… simply BECAUSE they never got the chance to look at their lives in the fullness of full spectrum insight.

They are blind because they REFUSE to see… not because they have somehow LOST their sight.

Self-Induced Myopia Is The Worst Form of Blindness…

We have found that people who have organized their lives around bold visions of the possibilities and potentialities of life are vastly more successful than those who think they are doing fine, yet have few tangible results to show for all their hard work.

Myopic people are not just short-sighted, they tend to create dream-crushing drama around everything they do, and everyone they touch.

People with self-inflicted myopia fail to see the obstacles, bottlenecks and pitfalls immediately ahead of them… so they needlessly crash into success-terminating hardships while ever professing that they are merely a victim of inevitable circumstances… and are being held back by dark forces.

Ultimately, these dark forces are easily seen by others with vision, who usually go on to snatch victory out of the clutches of failure.

One person wins, the other is left to wonder why.

People suffering with myopic vision regale in telling heartbreaking stories about how they snatched defeat out of the clutches of victory… over and over again… never realizing the inevitable nature of their folly… loudly explaining to all who will listen how they turned the self-fulfilling prophecy of success into a life of gloom chasing doom!

Myopia is easily cured.
