“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.” ~ Thomas Jefferson
Making Mental Toughness a Habit…
Please take a minute to watch our inspiring little video on the power of mental toughness.
Just take a breath… engage… and THINK!
Think about your life right now. Are you tough enough for the challenges ahead?
Think about everyone around you. Do you have the mental attitude to lead them to victory?
Just stop and think.
The question then becomes, have you made mental toughness a habit?
This is a very big deal.
A habit, of course, is something you do automatically, intuitively, or instinctively.
Habits are created over time when you are given a Cue… perform an Action… and receive a Reward.
The more consistently you take the action immediately following the cue, the more quickly the habit will take hold.
So, let’s step out of the box a bit. Understanding is key to habituating…
Mental toughness is a measure of individual resilience and confidence that may predict success in sports, education and the workplace. As a broad concept, it emerged in the context of sports training, in the context of a set of attributes that allow a person to become a better athlete and able to cope difficult training and difficult competitive situations and emerge without losing confidence. In recent decades, the term has been commonly used by coaches, sport psychologists, sports commentators, and business leaders.
There are several factors as to why a positive mentality or mental toughness is a huge benefactor to success. An elite athlete must be able to handle pressure, have self-belief and avoid any lifestyle distractions. They must have that urge to win and know that they have all the capabilities to do anything they desire. This separate’s the good athletes from the elite athletes.
Mental toughness is frequently used colloquially to refer to any set of positive attributes that helps a person to cope with difficult situations. Coaches and commentators freely use the term mental toughness to describe the mental state of athletes who persevere through difficult circumstances to succeed. In support of this, a number of studies have linked mental toughness to success and high achievement achievement.
The Take Away?
Your attitude matters. Your ability to respond matters. Your resiliency matters.
And most importantly, your ability to prepare yourself emotionally, mentally, and physically for competition matters.
We all compete for our daily bread. We all compete for attention… to be heard… to be respected.
This means taking action in spite of risks. Developing the Mental Toughness Habit is what makes this possible.
Final Step…
Look at your financial situation right now…
Look at your personal relationships right now…
Look at your career prospects right now…
Look at your retirement prospects right now…
If you are doing great, sitting on top of the world with no money worries, killing it, and creating a legacy worth leaving… GREAT!!!
You are tough enough to face the future and have made mental toughness a habit.
If you are living paycheck to paycheck… are afraid of what the future might bring… and have learned to settle and struggle rather than step up to success… this is a conversation worth pursuing.
I have always loved this quote as it explains why some people succeed and others fail. As we say in the Power of TQ, winners EXPECT to succeed. Losers fail simply because they do not EXPECT to succeed in the first place.
“Your toughness is made up of equal parts persistence and experience. You don’t so much outrun your opponents as outlast and outsmart them, and the toughest opponent of all is the one inside your head.” – Joe Henderson
The Mental Toughness Habit and the Excellence Habit are interwoven.
There is no question that developing the Excellence Habit leads to a life filled with proud accomplishments.
Honor, wealth, excellence, high achievement, meaning, and significance are all at the same level.
They are the outcome — the RESULT — of habitually taking the Right Actions… in the Right Way… for the Right Reasons… at the Right Time.
You take the RICHT actions and you get the RIGHT results. Habitually do this, you live a life of excellence and honor, not mediocrity and failure.
As summed up by Aristotle…
“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”
