The Power of Unconditional Commitment
“I have a loyalty that runs in my bloodstream, when I lock into someone or something, you can’t get me away from it because I commit that thoroughly. That’s in friendship, that’s a deal, that’s a commitment. Don’t give me paper — I can get the same lawyer who drew it up to break it. But if you shake my hand, that’s for life.” ~ Jerry Lewis
Total Business Success Comes Down to a Single Word…
As part of the launch of our 2019 Midas Touch Bundle we will be talking about big issues, but in a highly condensed format.
Today it is on the power of total commitment.
As we say in The Golden Game, there is a big difference between INTEREST and COMMITMENT.
Think about this the next time you order bacon and eggs.
The hen is merely interested in your breakfast…
The pig is totally committed!
Commitment can be thought of as your intention to produce a result.
The result could be something as simple as showing up for a meeting on time or as complex as starting a new business. Commitment is the bridge between your vision (what I want) and reality (what is).
It is the starting point for you translating vision into reality.
Commitment is more than words. Words may be an expression of commitment but action is the essence.
As such, commitment is much more than being “interested” or “thinking about” making something happen.
There will be times in your life when you tinker with an idea—writing a book, starting a consulting business, etc.. But it doesn’t become a commitment until you know, deep in your heart, that you are willing to do everything necessary to make it happen.
To better understand this process, I looked up the best advice on the web, and condensed a million books on the subject down to something simple to understand.
In fact, I found a really well-written article by Logan Marshall of his Free Life Project. In part his 4 steps…
1. GET YOUR MINDSET RIGHT
Success in any aspect of life starts with your mindset. Faulty beliefs and assumptions are like powerful headwinds halting your progress and blowing you off course.
In order to truly “go all out” and make unprecedented progress, you must make the decision at a core level to hold nothing back. You must take a good look at your life and decide that nothing is going to stand in your way of success.
2. REFINE YOUR GOALS
It’s hard to commit yourself to something if your finish line is just a nebulous point off in the distance. So before you do anything, get ruthlessly clear about what your ultimate outcome looks like. Nail down exactly what you want, how you are going to get there and on what sort of timeline you plan to reach your destination.
The key is to sculpt a vision that is so freaking awesome you are willing to do anything to achieve it.
3. FOCUS ON WHAT’S IMPORTANT
While the right mindset will give you the motivation you need to bring your A Game, if you focus on unimportant activities you still aren’t going to get anywhere!
“Going for it” doesn’t mean quadrupling your work load. Work for the sake of work is not the goal.
The goal is to live and work on your own terms.
This is especially significant if you already have a busy life full of responsibilities. In order to achieve freedom and escape the trap of selling your time for money, you must be ruthlessly selective about what you work on and what you ignore.
4. HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE
Unfortunately, personal drive usually isn’t enough. It may be enough to get you started, but after a week or two the “new years resolution effect” begins to set in and your initial enthusiasm slowly begins to fade.
In order to stay committed, you need a way of holding yourself accountable.
How? Here are my top three ways:
- Use the Weekly Daily Goals system to keep track of your most important tasks. At the beginning of each week, write down your top goals for the next 7 days. Before you go to bed each night, write down 2-3 key tasks that, if accomplished, will leave you satisfied with your day. Once you complete your goals for the day, stop guilt free.
- Tell others what you are doing. At the very least, tell your family about the goals you’re trying to reach. Even if their reactions are less than supportive, getting your ambitions out in the open will help you stay committed.
- Join a community. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people who are rooting for (and expecting) your success can be extremely powerful. It can provide you with the confidence and motivation you need to take your business to a whole new level.
The bottom line…
If you are not totally committed to your goals and plans, you will fail.
It is why half of all small businesses fail by year 4.
By contrast, a small team of highly motivated men and women committed to their value proposition becomes an unstoppable force.
Success ultimately comes down to this question…
Do you have a real STRATEGY…
or is your business just a tangle of TACTICS you gathered over time?
To make your business into the shining star on the hill takes mental toughness, skill and pure street smarts.
After all, there’s smart business and there’s dumb business.
- Dumb business is when you work insane hours, always in the catch-up mode.
- Dumb business is having little control over day to day operations. In other words, the business is controlling you.
- Dumb business is needlessly losing market share to a competitor for all the wrong reasons.
- Dumb business is failing to read the market correctly, grow too fast, and greatly exceed your capabilities.
- Dumb business is when you work IN your business and rarely work ON your business.
Smart business is the polar opposite of dumb!
Smart business is having a constantly-evolving strategy to WIN… not just “hope and work hard”… but to actually PLAN to WIN… then PLAY to WIN.
